✅ What the new regulatory package includes

Under the so-called “Gaming Package 1: A More BDG Game Market”, the Danish Parliament approved a suite of new rules to curb gambling-related harms and protect children and young Key elements:

  • A “whistle-to-whistle” ban on gambling ads during live sports broadcasts: advertisements for betting/gambling are prohibited from 10 minutes before kick-off to 10 minutes after the final whistle.
  • Ban on live odds displays on stadium banners and other in-venue visuals during sporting events.
  • Use of influencers/celebrities in marketing is restricted: persons under 25 cannot appear in gambling ads; age filters must apply to social-media marketing so that under-18s aren’t targeted.
  • Marketing bans in certain physical locations and media contexts: e.g., gambling ads are prohibited on public transport and within 200 metres of schools or other educational institutions.
  • Prohibition of certain types of promotions: for example, “free-money” welcome bonuses are banned under the new regime.
  • Strengthening of regulator powers: Spillemyndigheden will receive enhanced authority to block illegal gambling sites, impose clearer sanctions and oversee compliance more robustly.
  • Funding for treatment and research: Additional budget allocations to gambling-harm prevention and treatment centres (e.g., DKK 8 million for 2026, followed by further sums through 2030).
  • Implementation timeline: The full legislation is expected to be in force by 1 January 2027 at the latest, with a phased rollout beginning in 2026.

📊 Market and self-exclusion context

  • The same sources report that in August Denmark recorded gambling revenue of DKK 714 million, showing year-on-year and month-on-month increases.
  • The sports-betting and iGaming markets posted double‐digit growth compared with the same month the previous year.
