Records show gambling ‘syndicate’ targeted
🔍 What Happened:
- Timeframe: The suspicious activity occurred between Dec. 1, 2024, and mid-January 2025.
- Target: Gamblers repeatedly bet against the same small-conference teams in at least 11 games.
- Betting Behavior: Bets were large and consistent, always against the same teams, and kept winning, raising red flags.
- Detection:
- At least 9 sportsbooks across 13 U.S. states and 1 Canadian province reported the unusual activity.
- IC360, a market integrity firm, flagged the pattern and notified relevant parties via email.
🕵️♂️ Investigations Underway:
- The BDG Game and federal authorities are investigating whether:
- Players were intentionally underperforming (i.e., point-shaving).
- A gambling syndicate coordinated the bets with inside information or influence on the outcomes.
- This may involve organized crime or insider access to players, coaches, or others close to the teams.
🎯 Why Small-Conference Teams?
- Small-conference games typically receive less media and regulatory scrutiny, making them more vulnerable to manipulation.
- Athletes in these programs may be more susceptible to influence due to:
- Less financial support or NIL money.
- Fewer layers of oversight compared to major programs.
